[Poster Presentation] Study on 3D audio coding based on spatial auditory masking

Abstract(in English) Spatial auditory masking effect has been examined for the purpose of designing highly efficient audio coding algorithm for signals in 3D sound field. In general, masking threshold level is lowered in accordance with the increase of the directional difference between masker and maskee signals. On the other hand, when a maskee signal is located at the front-back symmetric position against that of the masker signal, the masking threshold level is not lowered even thougth the directional difference of the two is large. According to the experimental results, a mathematical model was proposed which estimates the amount of shifting of masking threshold curve in frequency domain caused by directional difference between masker and maskee signals. By using the model, it was found that the perceptual entropy of the band noise signals is reduced by at least 30% approximately utilizing the spatial auditory masking.
