Packet Transmission Scheme Employing LT Codes for Wireless Sensor Networks including Sink Nodes

Abstract(in English) Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a communication network that deploys a large number of wirelesssensors in a wide area, and that then transmits and collects information from the wireless sensors. Since the wireless sensors are located where the electric power is hard to supply, power saving is an important issue for WSN. Conventional schemes to collect the information perform packet retransmission, when transmitted packets are not successfully received. On the condition that the propagation characteristics are severely damaged, decision errors frequently occur, and increase the number of retransmissions, which results in increasing power consumption. In order to solve such a problem, this report proposes a packet transmission and collection scheme that applies the rateless code (LT code) to WSN with a sink node, which is robust against the decision errors and does not require packet retransmissions. In contrast with the conventional ones, the proposed scheme adaptively controls both the parameter of the degree distribution and the transition probabilities of the packets depending on the directions of the transitions, which are effective for WSN with the sink node. Computer simulations evaluate both packet error rates and the transmission times of the proposed scheme, and demonstrate that the proposed scheme is superior to the conventional ones.
