[Encouragement Talk] Operational-Flow Smart-Contract to Support Inter-Organizational Cooparative System Operations for Permissioned Blockchain

Abstract(in English) Enterprises have paid attention to permissioned blockchain (BC), where business transactions among inter-authorized organizations (forming a consortium) can automatically be executed on the basis of a distributed consensus protocol. The BC has adopted the features of the smart contract (SC), which is programmable user-defined business logic deployed in BC and executed with the consensus protocol. A single BC-based system will be built across multiple management domains (e.g., data centers of each organization) having different operational policies; this will trigger a problem that its system operations (e.g., SC updates, taking snapshots) will become costly due to the difficulty in unifying and/or adjusting operational policy such as procedures, timing, etc., among management domains. To solve the problem, we have developed an operations execution method for BC systems; a primary idea is to define operations as SC (called operational SC) so that unified and synchronized cross-organizational operations can be executed effectively by using BC-native features. The method on the previous reports could only support typical operations which are executed in all organizations in parallel. However, actual cases require to perform more cooperative operations while sharing/exchanging information between organizations and nodes (e.g., organizations take turns executing a command). In this research, first we extracted cooperative operations patterns among inter-organizations. As the result, we listed up four operations of be executed (1) only by specific organizations, (2) waiting for previous tasks to end, (3) executed while switching organizations and (4) executed while sharing/exchanging information. Then, we designed new operational SC (named “operational-flow SC”) which supports their cooperative operations and implemented the prototype using Hyperledger Fabric. We also estimated the introduction effect of the operational-flow SC in the typical operations of SC updates.
