Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is difficult to pronounce voiced and voiceless alveolar fricative sounds for deaf children. To support such deaf children, a pronunciation support software ``sanon'' has been developed. sanon detects fricative sounds, based on a zero-crossing rate of an observed signal. Although sanon can find voiced and voiceless alveolar fricative sounds, it cannot individually detect them. A pronunciation instruction class in a special school for deaf children has to individually instruct the pronunciations of the voiced and voiceless alveolar fricative sounds. This is a very important issue and is a very difficult task. This paper investigates a voiced alveolar fricative sound detector based on zero-crossing rate. We analyzed zero-crossing rates for voiced and voiceless alveolar fricative sounds, and found a difference between them. Specifically, a high zero-crossing rate for voiced alveolar fricative sound holds in a short time in comparison to one of the voiceless alveolar fricative sound. As the key to detect the voiced alveolar fricative sound, we use a time of holding the high zero-crossing rate. The proposed method detects the voiced alveolar fricative sounds when the holding time is within a specified region. We carried out a subjective test to evaluate the discrimination capability of the proposed method. The result showed that the proposed method is effective to discriminate voice and voiceless alveolar fricative sounds in comparison to sanon.
