Development and Evaluation of Teaching Materials with Functionalities for Controlling External Hardware of a Visual Programming Environment: AT

Abstract(in English) In order to intuitively understand in programs' behavior and generate interest in programming, observing phenomena occurring on concrete things (e.g. LEDs and model cars) is suitable than watching the transition of variables' value. The authors of this paper developed a visual programming environment: AT and implemented functionalities for controlling external hardware to AT. We also developed teaching materials, which express the execution results of the program as on/off of LEDs by using these functionalities. We introduced the materials in university classes and conducted a survey mainly on students’ motivation for programming. This paper subscribes the outline of the materials, the practice of the classes and the results of the survey.
