Real-time noise level detection algorithm for video

Abstract(in English) 4K resolution is a standard for TV market and recently 8K broadcasting started. Quality of video such as high-resolution, and low noise, is an essential requirement in video systems. Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff between noise and resolution: noise in video increases in proportion to the resolution during the process of photo-electric conversion in an imaging device. A noise reducer (NR) is a signal processing method to reduce noise. However, accurate noise level is needed for NR to work effectively. The noise level is deeply related to lighting conditions, and adjusting NR parameters including the noise level in real-time is required. Although frame difference is used to detect noise level, the frame difference consists of moving objects and noise. It is necessary to detect the frame difference caused only by noise. Moreover, complex algorithm cannot be applied to real-time video systems. In this paper, two noise level detection algorithms are proposed. We concluded the combination of the two methods can detect variety of noise level accurately in real-time conditions.
