Street Gutter Extraction Focusing on Boundaries Between Road and Street Gutter

Abstract(in English) Research on automatic driving and driving assistance has been greatly advanced all over the world in recent years. In this paper, we focus on driving in a residential area, which is a densely populated residential area where we usually live, focusing on "street gutter" buried at both ends of the residential streets. Because a side groove is a drainage groove embedded at both ends of a road and it is usually covered, there is no worry that something falls. However, in residential areas there are cases where lids are not properly attached or left unattended. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method to extract the street gutter with no lid as a region against in-vehicle motion picture recorded in a residential area. This paper pays attention to the boundary line between the road area and the side gutter area. Aiming to extract the boundary line as accurately as possible, the location of the side gutter area is estimated based on the extracted boundary line. Binarization and contour detection are used to extract the side gutter area. We also discuss quantitative evaluation of extraction accuracy using Ground Truth created manually.
