Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We tested 3,4,5-year-old children in Tokyo and Okayama by asking from which of Tokyo-dialect and Okayama-dialect speakers they learn object labels or ecological features. All the children in Tokyo preferred the Tokyo-dialect speaker to the Okayama-dialect speaker when they learned novel labels and ecological features, whereas all the children in Okayama demonstrated no preference. These results suggest that 3- to 5-year-old children exposed to only one dialect rely on native-dialect speakers not only when they learn labels but also ecological features, although children exposed to the two dialects in their everyday life do not show preference for one dialect over the other. That is, whether children prefer a particular dialect to the other depends on their language environment.
