Measurement of Ring Circumferential Strain with Actually Observed Brillouin Gain Spectra

Abstract(in English) A ring circumferential strain measurement method using a model of Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) has been proposed. In this method, the BGS model is fitted to BGSs observed in an optical fiber installed around a ring. In addition, the characteristics of the strain measurement error with respect to BGS-observation and load conditions have been clarified by simulations. This report describes experiments that we conducted to investigate the availability of this method. In these experiments, BGSs were observed in optical fibers undergoing strains produced the ring under concentrated and distributed loads, and strains were obtained from these BGSs. Instead of the spatially varying strains formed in the ring by these loads, the temporally varying strains equivalent to those strains, namely, deforming the BGSs in analogy with the spatial strains were formed in the optical fiber, and the BGSs were observed. The errors of the strains measured under both loads were 2% of the difference between the maximum and minimum strains, that is, the distribution range of the strain formed in the ring. This result indicates that this method is effective in the observed BGSs.
