[Fellow Memorial Lecture] Machine, human and sound communication

Abstract(in English) Speech is the most important modality for human-human communication. From invention of electrical speech communication, many technologies for supporting speech communication have been developed so far. The research issues in the early days was to expand the speech communication with respect to space and time such as telephone, radio broadcast and phonograph. With the development of computer technology, field of supporting technology of speech communication has been expanding continuously. The new technologies for such field are categorized as follows: (1) Supporting development of communication ability, such as the Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), (2) Supporting to expand the personal communication ability directly, such as hearing aid and speech translator, (3) Expanding the objects to which we communicate with speech, such as speech recognition, synthesis and spoken dialogue system, and (4) Expanding the channel of speech communication such as digital watermarking and information hiding. In this lecture, those research issues, including the author’s previous works, are addressed.
