A distributed channel selection scheme is proposed in this paper to reduce the number of starved access points (APs) in dense wireless local area networks (WLANs). A starved AP is an AP whose throughput is extremely low due to the lack of transmission opportunity. If the adjacent APs of an AP in the same frequency channel are not within the carrier sense ranges of each other, the AP in the middle would detect the channel being occupied for a prolonged time and therefore experience extremely low throughput, since the adjacent APs spatially reuse the channel and at least one of them transmits with a high probability. The proposed payoff function is calculated from the channels of the APs within two-hop. |
