Sign Animation Synthesis System Partially Introducing Facial Expressions for Weather News

(in English) We have been studying machine translation technology from Japanese to Japanese Sign Language (JSL) for weather news. In this paper we describe our developing weather news translation system, which partially introduces facial expressions. The facial expressions play an important linguistic role in sign language. However it is difficult to decide where to embed the facial expressions in sentences and how to express them. The developed system decides the embedding words in the sentences by using automatically-aligned words between Japanese and Japanese Sign Language. The CG(Computer Graphics)-animated facial expressions are made by CG designers for six emotion types classified on psychology.
