The use of a fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) to design the linear antenna array in free space is presented in this paper. The objective of antenna array design is to provide radiation pattern with maximum directivity by optimizing amplitude excitation coefficient and element spacing. The result of the FOA is verified by comparing with results obtained using the GA and GA/Fminsearch. Finally, the FOA method is efficient and accurate as an alternative optimization approach for electromagnetic problems of linear antenna array in free space.
