[Invited Talk] Wireless Systems for Disaster Recovery Operations -- System development based on the experiences of the Great East Japan Earthquake --

(in English) This paper presents wireless systems for disaster recovery operations. The disaster of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 11, 2011 in Japan reinforced the importance of communications in, to, and between the disaster areas, as essential lifelines. It also revealed that conventional wireless systems used for disaster recovery need to be enhanced to cope with technological changes and to provide easier operations. Our solution is to develop new systems including wireless access systems, business radios, and reduced-size satellite earth stations. Their selection and use depends on the situation of the disaster area as well as the services required.
