A study on effects of the precense of a cue tone on simultaneous notched noise masking -- variation of masking thresholds of 1 kHz probe-tone --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The aim of this study is to investigate whether the precense of a cue tone affects estimates of frequency selectivity or not. This paper attempts to estimate the tuning of an auditory filter, throungh notched-noise simultaneous masking experiments with and without the presence of the cue tone. In these experiments, masked thresholds of 1 kHz probe signal in the masker were measured for normal-hearing subjects as a function of the signal level, (10 and 20 dB SL), notch-width conditions in the notched-noise masker, and the presence of a cue tone. The cue tone was used as the same probe frequency and probe level. Filter-Qs related to ERBs were calculated from the derived auditory filters to compare the filter tuning. The estimated tunings from the masking data with the presence of the cue tone were considerably sharper than those estimated from the masking data without the presence of the cue tone. Moreover, the estimated tunings became much shaper as the probe level was lower. These difference of the tunings suggest that frequency selectivity may be affected by the effect of the presence of the cue tone on simultaneous masking.
