Since the inauguration of the 3rd generation (3G) mobile communication services, the mobile data traffic has been rapidly increasing. The available bandwidth for mobile communication services is limited. To deal with this bandwidth shortage problem, the denser deployment of base stations (BSs) and the multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO communication technology have been adopted to improve the spectrum utilization efficiency in the 4G and 5G systems. In this invited presentation, we will overview the advancement of cellular mobile communication systems from the 1G to 5G and then, we will look at ultra-densification of cellular systems toward 5G advanced and 6G systems. In particular, we will introduce a user-centric ultra-densification, distributed MU-MIMO, cellular distributed MIMO system concept, and interference coordination which deals with the problem of severe interference caused by the ultra-densification of cellular systems. |
