[Invited Talk] A 28-GHz Fully-Passive Retro-Reflective Phased-Array Backscattering Transceiver for 5G Network with 24-GHz Beam-Steered Wireless Power Transfer

(in English) The wirelessly powered transceiver can be configured as the maintenance-free relay, which is suitable for large-scale deployment, and can contribute to expanding coverage area of 5G network. This paper presents a fully passive retro-reflective backscattering transceiver which realizes 24GHz wireless power reception and 5G communication simultaneously. For Tx mode, the proposed transceiver transmits 28GHz signal to the direction which 24GHz comes from and for Rx mode, it receives 24GHz and 28GHz signals from same direction. The transceiver has the pseudo 180º phase shifter with a rotationally symmetric antenna pair and DPDT switch and supports 2-dimensional beamforming. In addition, the power generation from 24GHz WPT (Wireless Power Transfer) is available in both Tx and Rx mode thanks to a bi-directional architecture. To evaluate WPT, Tx and Rx performance, the power generation, beampatterns, and EVMs are measured with prototype 64-element phased-array module.
