Initial Experiment of Angle-of-Arrival Measurement for Aeronautical Surveillance Signal

(in English) Aeronautical surveillance systems for air traffic control exploit the wireless signal called Mode S.
If the angle of arrival (AOA) of a Mode S signal, which indicates an aircraft location, can be estimated precisely, various applications can be developed.
Examples are electric scan for a secondary surveillance radar, site reduction for a wide area multilateration, and position verification for ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillanece---Broadcast).
This technical report presents an experimental result of AOA estimation using array signal processing for Mode S signals.
ADS-B was selected as a representative of Mode S signals.
The signals from opportunistic flights were recorded using a 6-element linear array and software defined receivers.
MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification), Capon, and beamformer methods were then applied.
The estimation error was roughly 0.8 degree in standard deviation regardless the method.
