B5G (Beyond Fifth Generation) and 6G (Sixth Generation) mobile communication systems have been developed for Society 5.0 in the 2030s. Since traffic amount of B5G/6G will be from ten to a hundred times more than 5G, it is assumed that the processing load and power consumption will increase hugely. On the other hand, the base station virtualization of RAN (Radio Access Network) have been developed for decreasing procurement cost and improving operability of the mobile communication systems.
Generally, the virtualized network functions are processed by CPU (Central Processing Unit). However, some functions including parallel and routine operations will be offloaded on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) for faster operations from CPU.
Focusing on the high process efficiency of GPU and FPGA compared with CPU, the authors have researched power consumption reduction by the hardware offload for the virtualized base stations of the mobile communication systems. We chose some network functions which are appropriate for the hardware offload in the virtualized base station, and measured the power consumption of the functions processed by CPU, GPU and FPGA. Finally we evaluated power reduction effect of the hardware offload quantitatively. |
