MachBands perception is reflected in event-related potentials in visual cortex

(in English) Visual illusions are one of the phenomena that show a remarkable difference in image processing between machine learning and human information processing. Utilizing visual illusions enable to significantly change perception without changing the physical stimulus characteristics.
Various psychophysical experiments have been conducted to investigate the information processing of human visual illusions. In addition, many studies have been conducted to investigate the neuroscientific background of visual illusions by contrasting stimuli with and without illusory effects using functional brain imaging techniques. The MachBands illusion is known as one of the illusions, and it has been reported that the perception of MachBands depends on the luminance difference at the edge of the stimulus, which is the difference in luminance at the center of the stimulus. However, it is not well known which areas in the brain are related to the perception of MachBands and at which time of day. In this study, we investigated brain activity related to the perception of MachBands by comparing event-related potentials during the appearance and non-appearance of MachBands. As a result, Event-related potentials during perceived and unperceived MachBands were significantly different in the occipital area (O1, O2) at around 300-400ms, in the parietal area (Cz, Pz) at around 600ms, in the occipital area (O1, O2) again at around 700ms, in the parietal area (Fz, Cz) at around 900ms.
