An Integrated Text Entry Method in Virtual Reality

(in English) The purpose of our study is to reduce users efforts on inputting text in virtual reality environment. While voice chat is mainly used for conversation in virtual reality environment, text entry method is helpful when the user is required to be silent. In virtual reality environment, a user sometimes makes erroneous input because it is difficult to recognize spatial position of virtual input device. We propose two methods: the first method is flick entry with tactile impression, and the second method is Japanese Sign Language which does not require spatial recognition. A user can switch the two methods to suit their situation. In addition, we combine these two methods through the predictive conversion module which supports word correction and saves time required for text entry. We have evaluated our method through an experiment that measures entry time and the number of erroneous inputs.
