It is sometimes difficult for people to sustain a certain level of motivation to act and get things done. Although it is often better to have a high level of motivation to act, if the motivation to act at a certain point in time is too high, the motivation to act may decrease significantly when the contribution of the task to the achievement of the objective proves to be low in relation to the effort invested. In this study, we created an agent that not only increases the motivation to act but also works to suppress the motivation to act in response to the human activity situation, and investigated the effect of keeping the motivation to act within a certain range on sustained activity. The experimental results suggest that the participants who interacted with an agent that sometimes suppressed their motivation to act were able to relatively reduce their mental workload, even when a significant change in the task objective occurred and some of their efforts were wasted. |
