Semiotic and Cognitive Interactions in Cyberspace/Heterotopia -- Cultural Appropriation, Cultural Aggression and Cultural Wars --
Yasunari Harada (Waseda U.) TL2021-46
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Ignorance and negligence of linguistic, cultural and behavioral differences may lead to misunderstandings and unwanted conflicts but superficial and insufficient understanding of linguistic, cultural and behavioral patterns and traditions different from one’s own may lead to much greater misunderstandings and conflicts or otherwise run the risk of criticized as “cultural appropriation” in the age of international information society of today. In the meanwhile, television and radio broadcast, publications in the form of books, brochures and magazines, and contents distributed through web pages, mailing lists and social media from or operated by foreign countries or agents may influence perception and atmosphere of the general public and may even affect official decisions of a country and such possibilities may lead to possible identification of official foreign language teaching institutions and organizations as politically motivated propaganda machinery.
Choice of the languages learners are taught and the languages through which learners are taught various subject matters is crucial not only for the life decisions of each and every learner in the school system, but also for the well-being of the general public and survival and prosperity of the nation. On the other hand, it is questionable if a given community or a given nation is allowed to force is school attending public to choose a language other than their native ones in school education.
In this presentation, we intend to consider various factors affecting these issues and touch upon the educational meaningfulness of a mixed space of discourse, where the real and authentic interacts with the virtual and imaginary.
