An Evaluation of P4-based Dynamic Weighted Round Robin for Multipath Communication

(in English) Load balancing among the available paths enables flexible network resource utilization, such as high bandwidth and fault tolerance. In the past, installing such a load balancing function in network equipment was costly due to the required configuration changes and complex signal mechanisms on the control plane. Recently, Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processor (P4), which enables programmability on the data plane, has emerged, which may alleviate the problem. This work introduces and implements a P4-based Dynamic Weighted Round-Robin (DWRR) scheduler that possibly divides traffic into multiple paths in a dynamic manner. We have extensively evaluated the P4-based DWRR scheduler in mininet-wifi with UDP traffic. The results confirm the efficiency of our scheduler in a wireless network.
