A Study on Symbol Synchronization for Image Sensor Communication Using Propeller-type Rotary LED Transmitter

(in English) In this paper, we focus on a propeller-type rotary LED transmitter and image-sensor-based visible light communication (i.e., image sensor communication: ISC) using this transmitter. The propeller-type rotary LED transmitter, which is currently under development by us, generates multiple afterimages of light by rotating while blinking the LED light that is the transmitting signal. We use their multiple afterimages to improve the communication speed of ISC. In ISC using this transmitter, we found that a time gap between the symbol start timing of the transmitter and the shutter timing of the camera causes inter-symbol interference, which leads to errors in the demodulated data. To solve this problem, this study proposes a symbol synchronization method for image sensor communication using the propeller-type rotary LED transmitter. Specifically, the transmitter sends a known LED blinking pattern as a header of data. The receiver uses image processing techniques to detect the coordinates of afterimages of the LED lights from the received header pattern. In addition, we detect the symbol synchronization misalignment based on the detected coordinates for the data demodulation. The simulation results show that the proposed method accurately detected both the coordinates of the afterimage and the synchronization error in the range up to 2.5 m communication distance when the LED blinking angles were at 1-degree intervals.
