Digital Transformation in IT Education

The aim of this study is to construct an e-learning application that helps understand how automata work and thereby support digital transformation in IT education. In the classroom, it is common to explain the mechanism of automata using textbooks and slides, but actually their complicated movements are difficult to follow, even with the aid of animated slides, because there is frequent change from one state to another. This being the case, learning content that visualizes the shifting states of automata and allows the user to confirm them as often as needed can be expected to enliven their learning experience. For this purpose, we use JavaScript to show mappings between state transition diagrams, input strings, movements per step, and conditions for transition on HTML’s Canvas in addition to providing animated displays. For pushdown automata, which involve stack movements, change in stacks is displayed per step, while for Turing machines, a tape is displayed to visualize change in symbols. Our application provides plenty of questions for students to solve to better understand automata theory, but also has a function that further challenges the students to make their own questions. A survey showed that many found it useful in clarifying the learning content. Our future goal is to enhance this application by adding functions for painting state transition diagrams and for displaying configurations. |
