On the detectability of traffic reduction caused by QoS degradation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we discuss the possibility of detecting the event of traffic reduction due to QoS degradation. This event indicates that the QoS degradation becomes so significant that the users and applications react to the QoS degradation and it is necessary for network operators to detect and mitigate such events. One way to detect such causal phenomena is through causal inference. However, the detection of such events is not straightforward because the mechanisms causing the events may not satisfy the conditions for applying causal inference: acyclicity and independence among phenomena. In this paper, we show that it may be possible to detect causality by observing phenomena as multivariate time series. We also evaluate the detectability through simulations.
