Improving Accuracy of Doppler Ultrasound Signal-based Fetal Heart Rate Estimation by Signal Quality Assessment based on Correlation between Contiguous Heartbeat Waveforms

(in English) Fetal heart rate (FHR) can identify fetuses at risk, and it is essential to estimate FHR accurately. For non-invasive FHR estimation, the Doppler Ultrasound signal~(DUS)-based FHR estimation method has been investigated extensively. The mainstream of the DUS-based FHR estimation uses the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the envelope of DUS. However, the accuracy of FHR estimation tends to deteriorate when the signal quality is low. In this report, we propose a DUS-based FHR estimation method, which uses the ACF and assesses the signal quality based on the correlation between contiguous heartbeat waveforms. In the proposed method, we apply the ACF to the heartbeat signal extracted based on the spectrogram derived from the DUS. Next, we identify the heartbeat signal which has the low correlation coefficient and estimate FHR not using identified signals. Through the experiments, we confirmed that the proposed method archived higher accuracy of FHR estimation than the conventional method using the ACF of the envelope.
As a result, our method improved the averaged absolute error (AAE) between the estimated and reference FHRs of the conventional method using the ACF of the envelope by 0.57 bpm at most.
