With the increase in the number of elderly people living alone as well as the patients kept in isolation because of recent COVID-19 pandemic, there is a demand for remote monitoring support usable in a room. However, use of camera in bathrooms should be avoided with concerning privacy issue. Although a watching system based on sensor fusion is commercially available, it forces us an additional cost. In this report, we propose a monitoring support system based on the acoustic responses of room utilizing the existing audio devices in the room; which is relatively immune to privacy issue.
We aim to detect a person in a bathroom and also his/her posture by measuring the shift in the frequency characteristics of the room. In practice, the loudspeaker and microphone of a remote controller installed on the inner wall of bath room can be used to obtain the frequency responses. We seek for the feasibility of the proposed method through finite element simulation and experiments with a 1/4-scaled bathroom model. Existence of person, person’s posture, and the effect of the temperature on the estimation accuracy are studied by introducing two simple criteria. Existence of a person was successfully detected with the accuracy 100%, while the posture was estimated correctly at the accuracy of 92% in simulations. The experiments showed almost the same results as the simulations. |
