PSO-based Antenna Tilt Control Method for Cell Outage Compensation in Cellular Networks

(in English) Mobile networks are an essential public infrastructure providing multiple services and then necessary to maintain high availability.
On the other hand, cells can be out of service (cell outage) due to natural disasters or unexpected failures.
Recently, to accommodate the traffic in cell outage areas, cell outage compensation (COC) methods have been proposed to temporarily change antenna down-tilt angles of the frequency band (carrier).
In our previous work, we have proposed a heuristic method with less computation time than the existing methods.
However, the computation time of our conventional method increases with the number of outage cells, so our method cannot complete in a short period when multiple base stations fail simultaneously.
In addition, radio interference can increase when our conventional method changes down-tilt angles of multiple carriers, resulting in the degradation of wireless communication quality.
To address these problems, we propose an antenna tilt control method that consolidates the neighboring cell outage areas into one area and then calculates down-tilt angles with particle swarm optimization (PSO).
Through simulation evaluations, we show that our proposed method solves the problems of our conventional method and can obtain down-tilt angels that achieve COC while reducing the computation time.
