Directional selectivity of auditory time-to-contact estimation

(in English) Time-to-contact (TTC) estimation is essential for us to avoid collision with external moving objects. While the auditory system plays an important role in detecting events in all directions around listeners including directions out of sight, it is still unclear how the auditory system contributes to time-to-contact (ATTC: Auditory TTC) estimation. This study investigated whether ATTC can be changed depending on the direction of approaching object (0° (front),45°,90°,135°,180°). Results showed that 180° (back) was different from the other directions. We discuss the results from viewpoints of the (peri) personal space and auditory distance perception.
