We investigated the possible mechanism that control self-initiated attention, measuring electroencephalography (EEG) when the subject visual shifts attention from a location to another by free will, that is self-initiated attention shift. We applied criticality analysis to the EEG and found that the distribution of number of active electrodes follows power low with an exponent of -3/2 when expressed in a log-log plot. This relationship corresponds to optimal transmission efficiency, that is the measure of transmission efficiency of one. We calculated the time course of the slope of the distribution around the time of attention shift and found no clear difference between shift and no-shift conditions. This may suggest that brain likely keeps the critical state even under different task-driven conditions. |
