Changes in Language Production in the Retelling by Japanese EFL Learners -- Focusing on Lexical and Syntactic Complexity --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In retelling by the Japanese learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), we have examined how their language production is affected with repetition. Intermediate-level Japanese university students had watched two different news stories, took notes, and then retold the stories using their notes. The transcripts were analyzed to compare the tendencies of production in terms of general ideas, vocabulary, form, and topic. The results showed that the participants had selected an appropriate language for summarizing the news stories, and had used many 1,000-level basic words. Moreover, it was also confirmed that positive changes occurred in fluency, lexical diversity, and syntactic complexity in the second retelling.
