[Invited Talk] Iris Authentication using Higher-Order Spectral Features

(in English) This report summarizes the works on the use of higher-order spectral (HOS) features for iris authentication. Initially, we considered HOS as an alternative means to characterize image texture, that complements lower-order local features such as the responses of Gabor filter arrays. Besides the additional information about the relation between the spatial frequency components and providing a feature space of high dimensionality, it suffered from high computational cost. This issue was solved by introducing the local higher-ordermoment spectral (LHOMS) kernel which enables to reduce the computational cost by the so-called kernel trick. The LHOMS kernel, in addition to providing ways for texture classification by SVMs, it also provided a new way of characterizing a persons iris pattern. As opposed to the classical method of using Gabor filters for local texture characterization, LHOMS kernel provided ways to characterize the relation between the textures of two different regions in an iris image. This enabled a richer characterization of a person’s iris pattern in a high-dimensional feature space, which contributed to improved noise-robust authentication.
