Fundamental Study on Individual Identification of Printed Circuit Boards Using Capacitance Sensors

(in English) Individual identification technology using Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) guarantees the authenticity of semiconductor devices and printed circuit boards (PCBs). Previous PUFs mainly focus on the manufacturing variability of semiconductors. However, the scope of authenticity assurance could be extended to the board level by focusing on the manufacturing variability outside the integrated circuits (ICs). This paper proposes an individual identification method of PCBs by focusing on differences in output values of capacitance sensors installed on ICs as a fundamental study to realizing a board-level individual identification method. Specifically, we show that differences in the output values of capacitance sensors occur between different devices of the same model due to manufacturing variations in the ADC in the IC and the trace on the board. In addition, we show that it is possible to identify the same device by an identification experiment using the output values of capacitance sensors of multiple devices.
