Optical fiber sensors have been extensively studied owing to their advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic noise, light weight, etc. Among various fiber sensors with different operating principles, here we focus on a modal-interference-based technique that can be implemented by a simple low-cost “SMS structure”, in which a multimode fiber is sandwiched between two single-mode fibers. One of the multi-mode fibers in which modal interference has not been observed is multi-core plastic optical fibers (POFs) developed for image transmission. In this work, we observe modal interference in a multi-core POF for the first time and investigate its capability of temperature sensing. |
