A study on improving error-correction performance by combining signals received via satellite channel and IP network for 21-GHz-band satellite broadcasting

(in English) We are developing a 21-GHz-band satellite-broadcasting system that has the capability of transmitting signals at bit rate of up to 725 Mbps with 300-MHz band width. Since the 21-GHz band suffers large rain attenuation, we are studying a satellite-broadcasting system that recovers lost signals due to rain attenuation by supplementing them via an IP network. In particular, we propose a technique, namely “log-likelihood ratio (LLR) sharing”, which enables successful error-correction by sharing LLRs of bits received via a satellite channel and an IP network even at low C/N, where error-correction in satellite channel is impossible due to rain attenuation. The feature of LLR sharing is that it uses the same LDPC codes in both channels and improves error-correction performance by adopting the higher LLR, which indicates the certainty of the received bit. The computer simulation results showed that LLR sharing improved the required C/N in satellite channel.
