High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), which provides direct communication services to mobile devices on the ground from an altitude of 20 km, is attracting attention as a new communication platform for disaster countermeasures. In the HAPS system, an ultra-wide area is realized by covering the service area with multiple cells. In this case, HAPS using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as solar planes cannot maintain stable communication quality due to simultaneous handovers of many devices between cells which are caused by circling flight in the stratosphere. To solve this problem, we proposed a digital beamforming method to fix the footprint (FP) using a cylindrical multi-element phased array antenna and demonstrated the FP fixation control in a single cell. We also proposed an automatic area optimization scheme using beamforming antennas to optimize the configuration of each cell according to the geographical bias of the user distribution. We have implemented the FP fixation control function and the dynamic cell optimization function using multiple cells. In this paper, we report the results of the demonstration of each function. |
