Two-Stage Precoding with Null-Steering for Spectrum Sharing between HAPS and Terrestrial Systems

(in English) Coverage extension to the sky, seas, and mountains is one of the important concepts of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications. High-altitude platform stations (HAPS) have attracted much attention as a leading candidate for the coverage extension. In terms of spectrum sharing, it is preferable for HAPS systems to utilize the same frequency band as that used in terrestrial mobile networks. However, the signals from HAPS strongly interfere with the communications between a terrestrial base station (BS) and the users connected to the BS, which leads to serious deterioration in the system capacity of terrestrial networks. This paper proposes a two-stage precoding scheme for spectrum sharing between HAPS and terrestrial systems, where null points toward terrestrial BSs are created in the first stage, and multiple beams toward users are formed in the second one. Results show that the proposed scheme improves signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of terrestrial systems by about 7 dB compared with a conventional beamforming scheme without null-steering. Moreover, the proposed scheme achieves about 24% as high performance as the conventional one in terms of the sum capacity of HAPS and terrestrial systems.
