An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted aerial base station (ABS) is considered as a promising technology to assist an existing network in a disaster and to enhance network capacity in response to a sudden traffic increase during large scale events. However, determining the optimal placement of UAVs that maximizes the overall communication quality of users is a challenging problem because complicated air-to-ground channel characteristics and inter-cell interference of UAVs should be taken into account. Moreover, UAVs are faced with the problem that their available power resources are limited. In this study, we consider an ABS network in which UAVs perform radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting from terrestrial base stations and propose a novel distributed UAV deployment method. In our method, each UAV updates its position by using local information only and optimizes the harvested energy and the number of users covered by UAVs simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate that our method improves the harvested energy and communication quality of users. |
