This work aims to provide a novel objective measurement of facial expression, which can be used for dementia care, rehabilitation support, QOL evaluation, etc. We assume that intermediate facial expressions that are not the strong intensity and their transitions are important clues for estimating the internal states of a person. Based on this assumption, we analyze the process of the facial expression “transitions” rather than intense facial expressions that have been studied in various fields. For this purpose, we apply facial expression comparison based on deep learning to various pairs of face images. In our experiment, we displayed positive and negative visual stimuli on a monitor to the participants in sequence and collected the participants’ facial expression changes through video recording. The results indicate that typical transitions between positive and negative facial expressions in Russel’s Circumplex are well detected automatically. |
