Proposal for a measure of quantum mechanical non-orthogonality of multi-ary optical signals

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) With the development of optical communication technology, the range of application of multi-ary optical signals has been expanding. In addition to the well-known cases such as QPSK and 16QAM, there are many experimental reports on physical-ciphered communication systems using many more than 1,000 optical signals. Essentially, the properties of light are explained in terms of quantum mechanics. Therefore, it is important to know the quantum mechanical properties of multi-ary optical signals for better design and deeper analysis of current and future optical communication systems. However, few analyses have focused on such aspects of the multi-ary optical signals themselves. In this paper, we propose a measure of the quantum mechanical non-orthogonality of multi-ary optical signals. The proposed index is based on the theory of the least-squared error for the ensemble of quantum states. After confirming the validity of the proposed index by some numerical experiments, we apply the index to the case of optical $M$-ary PSK. As a result, it is shown that even when the average number of signal photons is extremely large, the quantum mechanical non-orthogonality appears clearly when the number of signals is sufficiently large. This suggests that the multivaluing of optical signals is more than a simple increase in the number of signals, but is an active operation that brings out quantum mechanical properties of optical signals.
