Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The authors have collected audio and video recordings of students interacting among themselves in tasks intended to help them acquire communicative skills in English. Observation and analysis of those recordings strongly suggest that existence of “other students” and interactions with them are crucial factors in making it possible for the learners to attain those goals in autonomous mutual learning.
One way of figuring out how communication is possible is observe successful cases and contemplate on what made them successful. The other way is to observe failures and contemplate on what was needed to make those unsuccessful cases successful. Study on second or foreign language learning may be a typical case of the latter.
In this presentation, we will focus on the importance of “noises”, or back-channels, side-channels and cross-channels that we find in interactions among those students. Those “noises” are important aspect of their interactions, through which students support themselves.
