Although hippocampal-dependent memory learning functions are affected by circadian rhythms, the circadian regulation of intrahippocampal EEG, which is highly relevant to memory learning, remains unclear. However, the mechanism of circadian regulation of intrahippocampal EEG, which is highly relevant to memory learning, is still unclear. Intrahippocampal EEG can be reproduced by administering the acetylcholine agonist carbachol to rodent hippocampal slice preparations. In the present study, we analyzed the temporal changes of carbachol-induced beta oscillations. The expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase, a GABA synthase, was also decreased in hippocampal slices during the dark period. In addition, the CIBO frequency was decreased when the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA receptors were inhibited during the light phase, suggesting that depression occurs via inhibition of GABAergic synaptic transmission during the dark phase. These results suggest that the EEG in the hippocampus is regulated by circadian rhythms and that inhibitory neural mechanisms are involved in its regulation. |
