A Theoretical Study on Suboptimal Joint Transmit-Receive Diversity In Correlated Rayleigh Fading Channels
Fumiyuki Adachi, Ryo Takahashi (Tohoku Univ.) RCS2021-73
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Joint transmit-receive diversity (JTRD) jointly optimizes transmitter and receiver diversity weight vectors to maximize the composite channel gain. On the other hand, in suboptimal JTRD, the receiver determines its diversity weight vector first and then, the transmitter determines its diversity weight vector so as to maximize the resultant composite channel gain assuming the receiver diversity weight vector. In this paper, suboptimal JTRD is considered since theoretical analysis of optimal JTRD is quite difficult if not impossible. Two types of suboptimal JTRD are considered: maximal ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) at the receiver. Closed-form expressions are theoretically derived for the distribution of received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and its probability distribution achievable by suboptimal JTRD in correlated Rayleigh fading channels. It is theoretically shown that if the number of transmitter antennas is fairly large compared to that of receiver, the fading correlation experienced by the receiver antennas improves the channel capacity compared to the case of uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. This is confirmed by the Monte-Carlo numerical evaluation using the derived closed-form SNR expressions.
