A Study on Suppression of Self-noise Propagation in Gaussian BP and GAMP for Correlated MIMO Detection

(in English) Generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) is a strong framework to realize low-complexity and high-accuracy multi-user detection (MUD) in large multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems.
However, it is well-known that since the GAMP-based detector separates high-dimensional signals based on matched filters (MFs), the convergence property of iterative detection is severely degraded when the spatial fading correlation between base station (BS) antenna elements is high.
To iron out this issue, in MF-based belief propagation (BP) detector, a method to design messages, ...information propagated between iterative processes, has been proposed to mitigate such performance degradation.
In this paper, we firstly show that introducing a similar message design method for GAMP-based MUD in highly correlated MIMO channels can dramatically improve the detection capability compared to the other MF-based iterative MUD schemes.
Based on the results, we qualitatively describe and analyze why such a dramatic improvement is possible only in the GAMP-based MUD, from the viewpoint of the algorithmic structure; and then, computer simulations demonstrate the validity.
