With the advancement of cooperative autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems, it is expected that the Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication would require higher data rate than the current frequency band allocation can support. To address the communications demand in the increasingly crowded frequency spectrum, one possible candidate is the dual use of the 76-81 GHz automotive radar frequency band for joint automotive radar and communication (JARC) system. In this paper, we introduce two different approaches to achieve the integration of communication and automotive radar and present a proof-of-concept implementation for each approach. The first approach leverages the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) typically used in automotive radar and embeds data symbol on top of the FMCW waveform using Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation. On the other hand, the alternative approach utilizes the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveform that is widely used in modern communication systems and performs radar processing on the received reflection. We then discuss on the advantages and disadvantages for each approach and conclude with some remaining challenges for deploying a joint automotive radar and communication system. |
