A Trial Manufacture of an Area-Efficient Distributed Amplifier Using Pseudo-Fractal Bended Transmission Lines

(in English) In recent years, communication traffic has been increasing. Distributed amplifiers have been reported to a bandwidth of over 100 GHz, making them suitable for fiber-optic communications and terahertz-band wireless transceivers. However, distributed amplifiers require a large area because they use many inductors or transmission lines. In this study, we fabricated a distributed amplifier with improved area efficiency by bending the transmission line into a pseudo-fractal shape. The measurement results show that the proposed circuit has a bandwidth of 47 GHz at the maximum gain setting with a core area of 0.12 square millimeter. On the other hand, there was a discrepancy between the measured and simulated frequency responses. In this paper, the causes of the discrepancy are discussed, and countermeasures are investigated.
