[Tutorial Lecture] R&D Status of Antennas, Propagation and System Technologies for Next Generation High Throughput Satellite

(in English) Recently, in the field of satellite communications, communications capacity has been improved by a multi-beam satellite communications system called High Throughput Satellite (HTS). For the next generation HTS, further improvement of capacity, flexibilization and digitization, and cooperation with terrestrial 5G/Beyond 5G are required. Therefore, as the next generation HTS, the system with hybrid of RF (radio wave) and optical, flexible allocation of communications resources, and in addition, the system capable of appropriately controlling these flexible communications resources by network control in cooperation with terrestrial 5G/Beyond 5G is proposed. The demonstration of this next generation HTS technology is aimed at utilizing the Engineering Test Satellite 9 (ETS-9). In ETS-9, the development of the capacity improvement of satellite communications by Ka band and optical communications and the flexibility of satellite communications by channelizer / DBF technology are aimed at the goal of the communications mission. Among them, as antenna technology, a Ka band fixed multi-beam antenna aiming at demonstration of large-capacity communication technology, a Ka band variable beam antenna aiming at demonstration of beam variable technology, and a Ka band common communications antenna transmitting a wide-area beacon signal has been developed. As propagation and system technology, a resource allocation methodology, carrying out beam allocation, frequency allocation, and a feeder link selection, etc. in response to the change of the traffic demand in the user link and the change of link condition of the feeder link is proposed and being examined.
