Many small-sized DC motors are used in an automobile due to good cost-performance and energy efficiency. They have been recently needed more small-sized and higher power. To realize them motor rotation has to increase. At high rotation arc discharge easily occurs and brush wear is a severe problem. From results of the authors’ previous research, the arc erosion rate of brush and commutator was evaluated using a switching test device. Further, the effect of arc quenching device (Zener diode) on arc duration and erosion was made clear. In this study, the authors investigated the effect of a Zener diode on arc duration and brush wear was examined using an equivalent commutation test apparatus. As a result, it was made clear that the arc duration with a diode become about one-eleventh as long as that without it. In addition, the arc erosion almost disappeared by using a diode. |
